They will inform us of the formula that was used to determine the letter grade and what action steps need to be put in place school wide. Magnet has approached us about becoming STEAM school, using project based learning and systems thinking embedded in the theme. Michelle suggested a good model school for STEAM integration is Innovation Academy.

Borton was the winner and recipient of a Box Tops and Sprouts award. PTA will hold the money for the school until it is decided how it will be used.

    4. Magnet Coordinator’s Report – The USP Family Engagement and Magnet Quarterly reports will be submitted this week. In an effort to increase family engagement among all Borton families, the family engagement committee decided to have an evening Borton Showcase in conjunction with a Sing Along on Dec. 7th.

20 school tours have been given since the start of the year. Jessica attended Boo at the Zoo for recruitment on Oct. 28th. Jessica will be at the TUSD Magnet Fair on Nov. 16th. So far many of the families that have gone on tours have heard about Borton through word of mouth from current and past Borton families. The Magnet applications have become available on Nov. 7th through Jan. 13th for the first lottery for the 2018-2019 school year. Jessica will start going out to preschools next week for recruitment.

Borton has decided to apply for the MSA Magnet school of Excellence Award this year. Jessica will be working on that to submit by Dec. 5th.

    5. PTA Report – PTA Aug 22nd meeting was to approve by-laws. There was a tax credit discussion to create more parent awareness about how tax credit works and what it funds. Box Tops was discussed and how classrooms can participate. Each classroom was given a box for collection.

This summer PTA collaborated with Crooked Tooth Brewery, a Borton family owned business, to do summer fund raising. They raised $223. It was decided that PTA hopes to have other events with Crooked Tooth. It was an easy event with a significant amount of participation.

Coffee cart was not showing a major profit last year. This year the profit is greater with $300 raised so far. They are currently purchasing Artisan products from TUSD kitchen. They seem to be liked and they will continue to purchase them and accept baked donations.

The former PTA secretary attended and shared her concern about the bug and mosquito problem in the restrooms.

Noemi wanted teachers to be aware of $200 grant available to them. Some teachers have used their PTA grant money for a classroom scholastic magazine subscription.

The Borton Auction will be Dec. 1st in conjunction with Book Fair.

PTA paid for a promotion piece for incoming kindergarten that includes invitations and 30 free copies of Pete the Cat books.

    6. Tax Credit Report – Flyer went out this week to families for Take Home Tuesday. Tax Credit information was included in the November Magnet Messenger. Kathleen asked for willingness for a board member(s) to be on the committee to give Lily Schwartz support in getting information out. There may be a possible parent volunteer to create an infographic to provide families that would be easier to understand. Kathleen will get information as far as time commitment and present it to the council when the minutes are sent out.

  1. Call to Order
Meeting called to order at 7:40 a.m.

  2. Approval of Minutes:
Denice moved to approve the minutes from Aug. 9, 2017. James seconded. Motion carried.

  3. Call to the Audience
      None at this time

  4. Information Items
    1. Introduce new School Council members absent from prior meeting – Gina Sotelo and Michelle Molnar: Not present at this time.

    2. Principal’s Report – Denice reported that ADE grades came out. Scores were leaked before they were meant to come out. Borton received a C grade, one point away from a B. Growth scores count for 50% of the score. There are other factors that need to be considered when calculating the score, including ELL students and Exceptional Ed. Denice will have more information once all benchmarks have been taken and we know what the cut scores are.

We have been given permission to hire a .5 Exceptional Ed teacher to service our Ex. Ed population. We are finding that we are not identifying and classifying current students as requiring Ex. Ed services, but they are enrolling at Borton with those classifications.

    3. Magnet Coordinator’s Report – Jessica attended the Love of Literacy event with Candi and Tori. It was well attended. Most families that visited our booth had younger children that were looking preschool options. Jessica has had several tours and will be distributing new brochures to preschools. A survey has been created for parents to fill out when they attend tours in order to determine where they are hearing about Borton. This will aid in determining recruitment targets. So far, families are coming to Borton by word of mouth and we have had preschool visitors from Desert Springs and 2nd Street school. The next TUSD recruitment event is on October 28th at Boo at the Zoo.

Borton will also be hosting a middle school night on Thursday, October 19th from 5:30-7:00pm. Middle schools in attendance will be Mansfeld, Dodge, Roskruge, Utterback and Booth-Fickett. Borton also sent a letter home to parents this week informing them that Mansfeld is our established pipeline school. Our students will automatically have a placement at Mansfeld and they will not be required to enter the magnet lottery. They must accept this placement if they want to attend Mansfeld.

    4. PTA Report – Board meeting was cancelled for 10/3. There has not been a meeting since the last PTA sponsored family event to know the financial outcome of the event. According to teachers that were present for Movie Night, it looked to be well attended. Kathleen will reach out to PTA to recruit a representative from PTA to attend site council meetings regularly.

    5. Tax Credit Report – Lilian Schwartz not present. Jessica presented the new tax credit banner for Borton that will be available after fall break.

  5. Study Item
    1. Tax Credit - Establish Tax Credit Community – Kathleen will get in touch with Michelle Molnar to see if she is still interested in becoming a part of this committee with an additional site council member.

  6. Agenda for next meeting
    1. Denice will have additional benchmark information. She will also inquire about tax credit information at her next early childhood meeting.

      None at this time

  4. Information Items
    1. Introduce new School Council members: All site council members were introduced including our new members, Jenna Horist, Holly Thomas-Hilburn and Leslee Valencia.
Not Present: Gina Sotelo and Michelle Molnar

    2. Principal’s Report – Denice reported that AZ Merit scores were slightly above the district average. Believe that students may not have scored higher due to the fact that the teachers were implementing new district curriculum. In order to achieve proficiency this year we require 15 more students to pass in ELA and 20 more students to pass in math. Due to the difficult format of the test, one focus for this year will be to support students in how to take the test. Denice reported that there will be a Title 1 and GSRR meeting for parents on Tuesday, September 19th at 8:45am in the library. Purpose is to inform parents how Title 1 funds are allocated and spent.

    3. Magnet Coordinator’s Report – Jessica reported that we have our first Magnet recruiting event Saturday, September 23rd from 10am to 2pm at the Tucson Children’s Museum. The theme is Love of Literacy. Ms. Candi and Ms. Tori will assist Jessica at the magnet event. Denice reported that we remain a fully integrated magnet school.

  6. Study Items
    1. Tax Credit – Kathleen reported that a Tax Credit Committee will be needed to assist Lilian. She has asked Michelle Molnar if she can be on that committee and is waiting for a definite response. Kathleen asked Site Council to let her know if they would be interested in being on that committee as well. Denice reported that tax money is currently low. It was suggested that it may be attributed to families not understanding how tax credit works.

    2. Meeting Dates – Set dates for future meetings (tentatively Oct 4th or 18th, Nov 8th, Dec 13th, Jan 10th, Feb 14th, March 14th, April 11th, May 9th, Aug 8th)

The meeting for October was decided on the 4th due to PTA scheduled meetings and Fall Break. Maryanne moved to set the dates. Holly seconded.

  8. New Business
Maryanne inquired about how Community School was doing. Denice reported that it is going smoothly with two classes being offered per day with the exception of Wednesdays. 21 Century will begin September 18th with 112 students currently enrolled.
